Government threatens post office closures
|
The Government have held the threat of post office closures over our heads for a long time. They already have the record for closing post offices faster than any other Government in history.
When the planned 2,500 closures are added on, Labour will have been responsible for closing one third of the network. But what has always concerned me the most about this is that the Government have been so unwilling to state exactly which post offices they are threatening and why How many of the doomed 2,500 post offices will be in Maidenhead? We have already seen closures locally, for example in Sonning, Ross Road on the Larchfield Estate in Maidenhead and Woodlands Park. We have even seen threats in the past to close the main post office in Maidenhead town centre. Will your post office be next? In light of the uncertainty I am urging everyone to take part in the Government’s consultation and let them know that we will not accept anymore post office closures in Maidenhead. You can email dti.enquiries@dti.gsi.gov.uk or write to Post Office Network Consultation, DTI, Response Centre 1, Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0ET. The consultation process ends on 8 March after that it may be too late. The Government have made a big fuss recently of welcoming public involvement in their actions, for example through the No 10 e-petitions site. As we saw with the road pricing petition, we can push post office closures up the Government agenda if a significant number of people register their concern. We may not be able to force the Government to abandon their plans entirely. But we can make it clear that we will not accept any further post office closures in Maidenhead. 28/02/07 |
