In the back garden

||||
Government figures obtained by local MP Theresa May show that recently 56% of new homes developed in Maidenhead have been built on former back gardens.
Theresa explained, ‘The Government defines gardens as ‘brownfield’ land – just like derelict factories or railway sidings. Land where houses are demolished, as in Shoppenhangers Road, are also counted as ‘brownfield’ land. This land is subject to a presumption in favour of development, making it easier for developers to win applications to build on these sites. This is unsustainable and we cannot allow development beyond the means of our amenities and transport links. The latest figures available show that in 2005 over half – 56% - of the homes built in the Borough were built on gardens or land where homes had been knocked down. We should protect our gardens which not only improve people’s personal quality of life, but also the feel of our local communities and neighbourhoods.’ The Conservatives are using a Private Members’ Bill to try to change the definition of ‘brownfield’ land
