May Concerned About Development of Gardens
|
Today Theresa May wrote to John Prescott’s replacement Ruth Kelly as new figures revealed this week show that 15% of all new housing is now built on gardens. The Government defines gardens as “Brownfield sites.”
Theresa May commented; “Over the past few years our area has been the victim of high building targets that have led to over-development in certain places locally. I am strongly in favour of building on Brownfield land to ease pressure on our Greenbelt. But not all Brownfield land is right for development and I find it amazing that the Government include gardens in their definition of Brownfield sites. We see the result locally as family homes are demolished by developers so that they can cram high-density housing onto garden land, changing the character of the area and putting yet more pressure on local services. “The new figures unveiled this week reveal the true extent of the problem with 15% of all development last year being on existing residential plots. I have written to Ruth Kelly, John Prescott’s replacement, to urge her to change the law to ensure that gardens are recognised for what they are, valuable green spaces that enhance our community and should be cherished not developed.” |
