New First Great Western Timetable Changes Make a Bad Situation Worse

Reading West MP Martin Salter has today reacted angrily to further changes in the train timetable announced by First Great Western in advance of an MPs’ meeting with the company in the House of Commons on Thursday.
Mr Salter has written to all commuters who have emailed his office with complaints regarding the new timetable which was introduced on December 10th asking for their reaction to these further changes announced by FGW. In his email Mr Salter said: “I suspect, as a response to pressure from MPs, and the public, FGW have today announced further timetable change. "As far as I can see this will do little to help in my area and will make matters worse for early morning commuters as the 5.52 from Oxford will no longer stop at Pangbourne (6.24) and Tilehurst. "In order to reduce overcrowding east of Reading the 7.23 semi-fast service to Paddington will no longer stop at Reading. Nothing is being proposed to address the times of the last trains to Newbury and Pangbourne or the cuts in semi-fast services at peak times to London. "I have attached a copy of the FGW press release for your information.” (Ed - see Latest News) In December, Mr Salter, together with Ed Vaizey, Conservative MP for Wantage, sponsored a cross-party House of Commons Early Day Motion (EDM 526), which calls for sufficient capacity to be reintroduced to the network which serves the crucial routes into London Paddington, to enable passengers to travel safely on regular and reliable services. The motion also notes that this decrease in the quality of the services comes at a time when fares have risen far above the rate of inflation. Mr Salter said: “First Great Western have created sheer chaos on the network and whilst I am pleased they appear to have acknowledged the error of their ways it is particularly galling for my constituents in Pangbourne and Tilehurst that they have reduced services still further and made an already bad situation even worse. "I intend to make constituents’ feelings known to FGW with some force when we meet them on Thursday.” 09/01/07 |
