Children’s Minister To Open New Southcote CHildren's Centre
On Monday 29th January Reading West MP, Martin Salter, will be welcoming Beverley Hughes MP, Minister for Children, Young People and Families, to the new Southcote Children’s Centre where she will perform the official opening ceremony.
Mr Salter visited the centre last year and was so impressed by the work they are doing that at the request of Carole Scott, the co-ordinator of the new Centre, he personally invited Beverley Hughes to open the centre. After the official opening there will be a tour of the Children's Centre, and the Minister will also visit the day care facilities at Manor Primary School, where she will meet parents who use the centre's two sites. Work started on the £520,000 Children's Centre building in November 2005, and it opened in April 2006. Facilities include childcare, a crèche, a one-to-one room for use by services including the Children's Information Centre and the Speech and Language service and an office. The centre also has a community room for parenting classes, health drop-ins, playgroups and community group use. Martin Salter MP said: “I’m really pleased that Beverley Hughes has found time in her busy schedule to visit Southcote and formally open our fabulous new state of the art children’s centre. It’s good for Ministers to see first hand the fruits of the increased public investment for children and young people that we voted for in parliament several years ago. "As a former play worker myself I’m a huge fan of both Sure Start and the children’s centre programme, as I believe in providing facilities that enable kids, from whatever background, to enjoy the best possible start in life.” 29/01/07 |
