Minister Agrees to Contact Royal Mail
|
Post Office Minister Jim Fitzpatrick has agreed to contact Royal Mail bosses over their plans to close the Reading and Gloucester Mail Centres and consolidate operations in Swindon.
This followed today’s delegation of MPs from both towns to a meeting with Jim Fitzpatrick at the Department for Trade and Industry. Mr Salter was accompanied by the MPs for Stroud and Reading East, David Drew and Rob Wilson as well as Terry Jackson and Wayne Levy from the Communications Workers’ Union, and Councillor Tony Page representing Reading Borough Council. At the meeting the Minister heard first hand the objections on environmental to the proposed merger and how the CWU was challenging the business case submitted by Royal Mail management. Tony Page made it clear to the Minister that Royal Mail had not even entered into discussions with Reading Borough Council over the possibility of relocating to a larger site in the Reading area. Martin Salter said: “Whilst Jim Fitzpatrick made it clear that the plans to relocate the Gloucester and Reading offices to Swindon were operational matters for Royal Mail and not a result of government policy or actions, he did say that he would expect Royal Mail management to hold serious discussions with appropriate stakeholders including the staff, MPs and local councils. "He also agreed to our request to write directly to Royal Mail Chief Executive Adam Crozier ahead of their board meeting in May to pass on our concerns.” The Minister was presented with a copy of a dossier from the CWU which illustrates that an additional 2 million road miles per year will be driven simply as a consequence of moving mail from Gloucester and Reading to Swindon and back again. This is on top of the 1.9 million extra miles that will occur should just 25% of existing staff agree to transfer to Swindon and drive to work. CWU South East Secretary Terry Jackson added: “It was a useful meeting and we can only hope that by bringing Jim Fitzpatrick into the process Royal Mail management will now enter into meaningful discussions about these ill-conceived proposals which are based a dodgy business case and will have damaging effects on both the staff and the environment. "I made it clear that the CWU has fully cooperated in the introduction of new technology at Caversham Road and that there are empty units on the site which are capable of housing further expansion. There is simply no argument to justify closing the Reading Mail Centre.” 01/02/07 |
