Salter Brings Streetgames To Westminster
|
Martin Salter, MP for Reading West, last week in the House of Commons attended the Parliamentary Launch of StreetGames, a new national charity, established in 2006 to promote sport for young people living in the most disadvantaged communities.
Mr Salter is a strong supporter of the Charity’s aims, and has agreed to be one of their patrons. The thinking behind StreetGames came from a highly successful and innovative football tournament organised in April 2003 by the Football Association, Government Office for the North West and the regional New Deal for Communities. The idea was to run a sporting event for young people in renewal areas, bringing together the worlds of sport and renewal. StreetGames aims to: • to get more youngsters in deprived areas playing sport; • to spread skills and knowledge so other sports workers learn how to involve these youngsters; • to advocate greater investment in disadvantaged communities through sport; • to support agencies interested in using sport for renewal aims; • to improve the quality of sports delivery in renewal areas. Reading Streetgames has been running since May 2005 and has gone from strength to strength working well with the Council and other partners. The programme consists of recreational and competitive sporting opportunities, and aims to increase social esteem and a sense of achievement in young people aged eight to 15 years. The 2006 season was made up of eight weeks of training sessions led by Level Two qualified coaches from local cricket clubs, followed by a large cricket festival and weekly matches. Volunteers from the local community were vital in supporting the coaches to teach the young people skills and drill and to assist with administration and organisation of sessions throughout the season. Martin Salter said: “As a patron of StreetGames I am pleased that their success in Reading and the North West, has led to programmes being rolled out across the country and the launch of StreetGames as a national charity. "There have been real and notable achievements of engaging with those young people who are usually outside of sport. Last summer in Reading over 120 young people engaged in the programme with many people attending the sessions from the surrounding areas.” He added: “Up and down the country, StreetGames delivers sport and dance to young people who are not members of sports clubs and are waiting for the chance to join in. "I am thrilled that Reading has been a leading part in StreetGames and I would like to congratulate Kayleigh Hodges from Reading who has been awarded the England and Wales Cricket Board Volunteer of the Year Award in 2006. "I am also delighted that StreetGames’ future in Reading has been secured through the Football Foundation grant of £30k for three years.” 02/02/07 |
