Timetable Protest
|
Reading West MP, Martin Salter, will be meeting with some of the angry Pangbourne rail commuters on Thursday morning when he is presented with a petition against First Great Western’s (FGW) new timetable which in particular has drastically cut the number of peak hour direct trains to and from London Paddington.
The petition was organised by Pangbourne resident Fiona Hope, and Pamela Bale, District Councillor for Pangbourne, and has been signed by well over 200 regular and other users of the service from Pangbourne (as of Tuesday 6th February). Tilehurst commuters have also added their voices to the protest. This action follows the petition received by Mr Salter at the end of January from commuters who use Reading West station and the deluge of emails he has received from constituents who have faced a reduction in fast trains since the December 10th changes which have caused overcrowding. In recent weeks Mr Salter has met with FGW senior managers on several occasions, and has written to the Health and Safety Executive asking them to investigate the levels of overcrowding on trains to and from London. He received an assurance that they would look again at services to stations in West Reading. Martin Salter said: “It’s a year since I first took this issue up on behalf of my constituents, and First Great Western have still not taken the steps needed to reduce the unacceptable overcrowding, and terrible service that commuters from Reading West, Pangbourne and Tilehurst stations are enduring. Fiona Hope and Pamela Bale have been campaigning with me and the huge number of signatories they have collected show how strongly local people feel on this issue. "I will call on First Great Western once again to take the urgent action needed to improve the service for my constituents as this saga has rolled on for far too long and is driving people off the rail network and back into private cars.” Fiona Hope said: “The response from Pangbourne and the surrounding area, especially from regular peak time commuters to London but also from other rail users including those who commute to Reading and Oxford has been overwhelming. This is indicative of the impact which the current adverse services are having generally on those living west of Reading.” 06/02/07 |
