Bus Minister Told of Cleaner Future
|

Reading could see diesel-free buses carrying passengers around the town this summer the government's Bus Minister was told.
Martin Salter, MP for Reading West, took Reading Buses Chair Tony Jones and Operations Director, Sam Simpson, to meet with the Bus Minister, Dr Stephen Ladyman, to discuss Reading Buses’ plans to revolutionise travel in the town. Tony Jones said: "The Minister seemed impressed to hear of our plans to trial enthanol powered buses and has made helpful suggestions on how the government may be able to support further development. The ethanol buses are more expensive to buy, but are virtually pollution free. "The 20 bio-diesel buses we currently have on order to introduce premier routes to Woodley and Lower Early later this year will probably be the last carbon fuelled buses we buy. We will be having an ethanol bus on trail in June and if all goes as we hope, we will expect to order new hybid grain or sugar cane powered buses on our regular services in 2008. "We are looking closely at what has been achieved in Stockholm where are bus emissions have been virtually wiped out and urban air quality greatly improved. "Even with our existing fleet we have dramatically reduced carbon emissions by over 65% this year. The last batch of buses will further improve that level, with an average age of buses on our premier routes of about 18 months old - which will be the most modern fleet in the country. The next step will then be to get rid of the carbon fuelled buses all together." Martin Salter said: "I'm delighted that the Minister was so positive about the plans by Reading Buses to use more environmentally friendly fuel. The world's oil reserves are dwindling and the atmosphere is filling up with dangerously high levels of CO² so it is obvious that new fuel sources must be developed and promoted." 19/02/07
