Letter to Council over Ryeish Green Closure
Dear Cllr Browne,
Proposed closure of Ryeish Green School I understand that the Executive of Wokingham District Council is due to consider a report following the recent consultation on the future of Ryeish Green School. I am writing to you in my capacity as a Member of Parliament whose constituents attend Ryeish Green school. As you know I have written to you before on this matter and not received the courtesy of a reply. The case against the closure of Ryeish Green is powerful, and is based on its record as Wokingham's most improved school and the projected increase in housing numbers and population in the neighbourhoods currently served by the school. I have had an opportunity to read Wokingham's response to the consultation which has completely failed to take these points into account. Furthermore, I believe that if Wokingham Cllrs were to press ahead and endorse the closure of Ryeish Green on the basis of this report, they would open themselves up to legal challenge for the following reasons: 1) The Council response dismisses Ryeish Green's business plan which includes an application for Trust School status. 2) There is clearly an attempt to bypass the existing Schools' Organisation Committee which exists to deliver a balanced viewpoint beyond the confines of a group of politicians. 3) The Council response deliberately misrepresents the results of the consultation by claiming that only 385 people took part. When in fact I know that there were around 1000 responses including representations from churches, parents and primary schools in the area. I believe that a decision on the future of Ryeish Green must be taken on the basis of a full disclosure of the facts and not on a fundamentally flawed report which gives a misleading impression of the views of local people and other stakeholders. I must urge you and your colleagues on Wokingham Council not to proceed with the decision to close Ryeish Green for these reasons. I have agreed with the Schools' Minister, Jim Knight MP, that I would keep him informed regarding the conduct of Wokingham Council over this matter. I hope to hear from you this time. Yours sincerely, Martin Salter MP 22/02/07
