Success for Pangbourne commuters
|
Martin Salter MP has today welcomed the news from First Great Western (FGW) that Pangbourne residents will have a crucial morning peak service reintroduced by from Monday 26th March.
This development will hopefully alleviate the unacceptable overcrowding on the commuter services from Pangbourne following the introduction of the new FGW timetable in December 10th, which drastically cut the number of peak hour direct trains to and from London Paddington. The new 6.18am service from Pangbourne will get commuters to London by 7am, and comes in response to over a year of non-stop campaigning by Mr Salter, local residents and councillors, to improve the services to stations to the west of Reading. Over 400 local residents and commuters signed a petition to FGW Managing Director Alison Forster pressing for action to be taken to reverse the reduction in services. This is in addition to the deluge of emails and letters Mr Salter has received from constituents on this matter. Martin Salter said: “I am delighted that First Great Western have finally listened to the huge number of rail users in Pangbourne who have had to put up with an unacceptable service since the introduction of the new timetable. The new 6.18am service will not only improve journeys for Pangbourne commuters, but will hopefully also reduce congestion at Reading Station as fewer people will need to change from a slow train to a fast train.” Pangbourne resident and local campaigner, Fiona Hope, said; “I am sure people in Pangbourne will recognise that First Great Western are making an attempt to meet the concerns of commuters. I welcome this announcement and hope that it is a sign of things to come.” The FGW announcement follows the meeting held by Thames Valley MPs with the Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander, at the end of February, in which the Minister announced that the Department for Transport has insisted on a 40 point recovery plan with monthly reports and monitoring that First Great Western would have to adhere to in order to improve services on the Great Western Mainline. The recovery plan includes the delivery of a new timetable in May, improvements to both the high speed and commuter services and an increase in standards of customer care along with significant strengthening of the technical staff and senior management capability at First Great Western. Last month First Great Western announced the restoration of the 07.25am service from Reading West to London Paddington, and the 00.15 London Paddington to Newbury service, following campaigns by Martin Salter and local residents. Martin Salter added: “The Secretary of State and Thames Valley MPs have made it clear to First Great Western that they have to take urgent action to improve services. Today’s announcement is certainly a step in the right direction, but I will continue to keep up the pressure to restore peak hour services to Tilehurst as soon as possible and to press for a late night service on the Didcot line.” 20/03/07 |
