Salter welcomes rail minister
|
Rail Minister Tom Harris MP dropped in on a flying visit to Reading Station yesterday (Tuesday 20th March) on his way back from a meeting in Exeter to be briefed by Network Rail officials and members of the Reading Station Partnership Board on the case for upgrading Reading Station.
Mr Harris invited local MPs Martin Salter and Rob Wilson to join him along with Lead Transport Councillor John Howarth. The group toured the main Reading Signal Box and heard how busy and congested the lines are in this part of the network. They then adjourned to the Town Hall for a Power Point presentation by Network Rail. Martin Salter said: “I have no doubt that the Minister came away convinced of the case for the Reading Station upgrade which will improve platform capacity and reduce overcrowding at the station, as well as removing the main rail bottle neck west of London. "He was told that last year 183,000 minutes of delay on the Great Western Mainline were caused by congestion around Reading Station and it was significant that earlier in the day people in Exeter were lobbying him to approve the funding bid for Reading in the summer.” The Department of Transport is due to make an announcement in July. 21/03/07 |
