£1m cost of "daft idea"
|
Reading West MP, Martin Salter, has written to Reading Borough Council to find out the cost to council taxpayers of changing the name of the town to ‘Reading-on-Thames’ as suggested by Reading East Tory MP Rob Wilson.
Environment Director Anita Cacchioli has now confirmed the costs as follows: 1. Altering all the traffic signs in the borough - £70,000 2. Replacing all the road nameplates in the borough - £750,000 (at two per road) 3. Changing the main ‘Welcome to Reading’ signs - £20,000 4. Changing all of the council signs and headed notepaper - £25,000 Martin Salter MP said: “This is a huge sum of money, which could be better spent on care for the elderly, youth facilities, schools or indeed almost anything else other than this daft idea. It would put council tax up by 2% or £24 for Band D council taxpayers. This crazy Tory scheme would waste the best part of £1m of hard earned council tax payers’ money just to change the road signs and street name plates. Reading has much more pressing priorities than this and I have called on Reading Borough Council to formally announce that it rejects Rob Wilson's suggestion which after all was regarded as an April Fool's joke 12 years ago." David Sutton, Leader of Reading Borough Council said: “The council has no intention of wasting public money on Rob Wilson's half-witted suggestion. Unlike the Tories in Wokingham Labour has prepared a budget to protect services for the elderly and vulnerable - these are our real priorities. Council tax payers don't want their cash spent on pointless gimmicks." 22/03/07 |
