Salter slams Reader's Digest survey
|

Reacting to the Reader’s Digest survey which heavily criticised Reading, local MP, Martin Salter has slammed the survey as “biased, fundamentally flawed and out of step with other more serious studies of life in the town”.
He drew attention to last year’s report from John Moores University in Liverpool which compared 56 towns or cities with populations over 125,000 and last month’s comments from the Governor of the Bank of England who praised Reading’s strong local economy. Mr Salter said; “This survey only interviewed 1,162 people nationwide and therefore only a handful of Reading residents which makes any conclusion statistically biased and the results fundamentally flawed. "Moreover it is out of step with all recent, more serious studies which put Reading in the top ten places in Britain for jobs, opportunity and quality of life. "Only last month the Governor of the Bank of England was praising Reading’s strong local economy and if Reading was such a terrible place to live perhaps Reader’s Digest could explain why our housing market is booming with thousands of people wanting to live here and share in the successes of the town.” He added: “We have two of the top performing schools in Britain and last year Reading was the second most improved authority for the number of students achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A to C grades. I simply do not recognise the picture that the survey is trying to paint of our town”. 18/04/07
