Salter joins campaign against excess packaging
|
Reading West MP, Martin Salter, has called for supermarkets to drastically cut the amount of packaging on the food and other products they sell, as part of a national campaign against excessive waste.
The campaign, launched by The Independent newspaper in January of this year, aims to raise awareness of the shocking fact that of the 30 million tons or so of household rubbish we produce every year, about a quarter by weight, and as much as 60 per cent by volume, is packaging waste. Mr Salter is one of over a hundred MPs who have signed up to House of Commons Early Day Motion 814 Excessive Packaging which states; That this House notes with concern the excessive levels of packaging used by manufacturers and retailers, accounting for 4.6 million tonnes of household waste every year and 17 per cent. of the average household food budget; commends the recent campaign against excessive packaging run by the Independent newspaper; and urges supermarkets to reduce where possible packaging on goods sold, encourage the re-use of plastic bags, recycle packaging waste and encourage suppliers to reduce packaging further up the supply chain. Mr Salter said: “If we carry on throwing rubbish away at the current rate, we will run out of landfill space in as little as nine years time. Reducing the amount of packaging around food and everyday goods is crucial - as a former dustman it amazes me how much bigger the bins have grown. That is partly due to the destructive way in which goods are packaged – almost everything you buy now comes overpackaged in plastic wrappers and trays.” He added: “Reading Borough Council has already shown that it is serious about tackling climate change by introducing the alternate weekly collections, which has helped to increase recycling rates in the town. I am therefore calling on the supermarkets in Reading to do likewise, and drastically cut the amount of packaging they use.” 27/05/07 |
