Martin Salter, MP for Reading West, last night tabled a Parliamentary Early Day Motion (EDM) 1422 backing the ‘Mayday for Nurses’ campaign.
The campaign which is the brainchild of Cambridge political economist, Dr Noreena Hertz, hopes to persuade all 556 Premiership players to give a day’s pay to the charity by the end of the season on May 13th (also the end of International Nursing Week). In particular, Mr Salter, a season ticket holder at Reading Football Club, singled out local football players from the Royals who were the second team in the Premiership to sign up en masse to the campaign, saying: “It’s fantastic to see footballers giving to such a worthy cause. The money which has been donated by the Royals’ players will make a real difference.” More than 140 players from the Premiership and Scottish Premier League are donating money to the nursing hardship fund. Alongside local talent, footballers including international stars such Thierry Henry (Arsenal), Ryan Giggs (Manchester United), Jermaine Defoe (Tottenham), Neil Lennon (Celtic) and Barry Ferguson (Rangers), and managers Sir Alex Ferguson, Sam Allardyce and Glen Roeder have all contributed to the fund. EDM 1422 was tabled by Mr Salter in celebration of the footballers from the Premiership and the Scottish Premier League who have agreed to donate a day’s pay to the ‘Mayday for Nurses’ Hardship Fund. The EDM has gained support from across the political spectrum and aims to raise further awareness of this campaign and the vital work that nurses carry out. Martin Salter said: “I am thrilled to be sponsoring this cross-party Commons motion celebrating the vital work of Britain’s nurses. Indeed, I was one of nearly 150 MPs who have campaigned recently for higher pay for nurses in recognition of the huge contribution they make to the National Health Service in particular, and society in general. "I am particularly proud that Reading Football Club was one of the first Premiership teams to sign up to donate a day’s wages to the nurses’ hardship fund.” Noreena Hertz who has visited teams all over the country to drum-up support said: “I’m delighted that MPs are joining footballers in supporting the nurses’ cause. I have been overwhelmed by the support I have had from Premiership footballers in this campaign. Many players know first hand just how tough it can be to work as a nurse and they have shown no hesitation in highlighting the difficult situation that nurses are currently in.” Speaking after her visit to the Royals’ training ground at Hogwood Park, she said: “It’s fantastic news that the Reading players are willing to back our nurses and hand over a day’s wages to the hardship fund. “With 30 days to go to the end of the season, momentum is really growing with more and more players coming on board each week. Over the next few weeks, I intend to visit every club in the Premiership and I hope Reading’s support will encourage those players who have not yet signed up to come on board and donate their wages to the Mayday for Nurses cause.” Reading’s Captain Graeme Murty added: “We are delighted to give our support to the Mayday for Nurses campaign.” “Everyone will come into contact with a nurse at some stage of their lives. They are amazing people who make such a valuable contribution to society. The players at Reading Football Club want to help in highlighting the problems faced by nurses in the UK.” Dr Hertz is visiting clubs across the country as the countdown to the end of the season begins.
