Salter demands overrule of "cruel" nice guidance
|
Reading West MP, Martin Salter, has called on the Secretary of State for Health to overrule the guidance of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to restrict the access to potentially sight-saving treatment to only a limited number of sufferers of wet age-related macular degeneration (Wet AMD).
Mr Salter has tabled a Parliamentary Question to the Secretary of State which asks: To ask the Secretary of State for Health, if she will overrule the draft National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines approving the use of the drug Lucentis for only a limited proportion of the patients who suffer from wet age-related macular degeneration; and if she will make a statement. Wet AMD is the leading cause of sight loss in the UK and affects a quarter of a million people. The condition can lead to sight loss in as little as three months and requires prompt treatment if sight is to be saved. The ruling by NICE will prevent 80% of people who could benefit from Lucentis from access to the drug, as treatment will only be provided to patients with both eyes affected by the condition, which could force people to wait until one eye has gone blind before they receive the drug on the other eye. Earlier this year Martin Salter successfully lobbied for Berkshire West PCT to fund Lucentis for Les Dean, a Royal Navy veteran of 12 years service who suffers from macular degeneration. Mr Salter said: “This is a cruel and unacceptable decision by NICE. It is simply wrong to condemn people to unnecessary suffering and blindness when sight-saving drugs are available. 2Furthermore, it makes no economic sense, when the cost of treatments is compared to the cost of supporting patients through a lifetime of blindness. I have therefore called upon Patricia Hewitt to overrule this guidance.” 19/06/07 |
