Labour slams Tories over Reading's third Thames bridge
|
Reading West MP, Martin Salter, today criticised Reading East MP Rob Wilson for grandstanding in the Chamber of the House of Commons on the issue of the third Thames Bridge.
Minutes of the MPs’ liaison meetings with Reading Borough Council show that Mr Wilson has failed to make good his promise to set up cross-border meetings with Henley MP, Boris Johnson, and Oxfordshire Tory Councillors who remain opposed to the proposal. Today Mr Wilson used Prime Minister’s Question Time to ask Tony Blair to help him sort out the “squabbling between local councils” yet at a MPs’ liaison meeting in October 2005 in Reading he was actioned to organise a meeting on the third Thames Bridge with senior Oxfordshire Tory politicians. Reading West MP, Martin Salter, who was at the meeting said: “I’ve got to give full marks to Rob Wilson for bare-faced cheek as we’ve now been waiting 20 months for him to make good his promise to set up a round table meeting with Boris Johnson and those Oxfordshire Tory councillors who remain opposed to the much-needed third Thames Bridge for Reading. "It might be a little more helpful if Rob actually kept his own promises before seeking to grandstand on this important issue.” Reading’s new Transport Boss, Tom Crisp added: “I welcome any support for Reading’s third Thames Bridge but the main stumbling block remains Oxfordshire politicians who really do need to accept that they cannot continue to resist measures vital to traffic movements in and around the town. "If Mr Wilson can help reduce his colleagues’ obstructive behaviour then I will be delighted but I’m afraid that the Council has been waiting nearly two years for him to actually do something positive on this issue.” 20/06/07 |
