Salter keeps up pressure for reading station upgrade
|
Martin Salter, MP for Reading West, this week continued to apply pressure on the government to upgrade Reading Station.
Speaking in response to a question on train overcrowding during Transport Questions in the House of Commons Mr Salter asked the Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander: “Does the Secretary of State recognise that an announcement of the funding for the Reading station upgrade in next month’s high level specification output statement would contribute significantly to reducing train overcrowding on the Great Western main line?” Mr Salter has been campaigning for an upgrade to Reading station for many years. He has raised the issue in the House on numerous occasions, and has taken the Reading Station Partnership Board to meet with the Secretary of State. Mr. Alexander said in response: “My hon. Friend has made clear to me the concerns of his constituents about the high level of usage of Reading station. He has brought a group to the House of Commons to present his concerns directly to me and I assure him that we are mindful of them as we prepare the high level output specification.” The current plans for the upgrade to Reading Station would improve track and platform capacity from 23 to 60 trains an hour and that it is vital in removing a major bottleneck on the Great Western Mainline. Mr Salter said: “Whilst I never expected Douglas Alexander to preannounce his July funding decision I am quietly confident that the pressure and campaigning will pay off and that the much needed Reading Station upgrade will be given the go ahead next month. "Although the scheme is expensive it will clear a long standing bottle neck on the Great Western mainline and make a huge difference to the quality of life for rail commuters from Reading and beyond.” Mr Salter has also seen part success with the news that the Reading Station improvement scheme, for which he has been campaigning in Parliament, will now eliminate the long-standing traffic bottlenecks at the Cow Lane Bridges, that have blighted travel in west Reading for more than thirty years. The bridges will be replaced if the rail scheme to expand capacity at Reading station gets the go ahead in July. The plans, which will reduce delays and overcrowding and enable more trains to run, would mean construction of the new bridge at Scours Lane. The work should start in 2009 and finish by 2011 should the government give the go ahead at the funding announcement next month. 21/06/07 |
