Report names Reading as top UK city

Reading West MP, Martin Salter, has hailed the conclusions of the report published this week by the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) Centre for Cities that declares Reading as the fastest growing city in England, as “one in the eye for all those Mickey Mouse surveys that have sought to do down our town”.
The IPPR Centre for Cities report compared employment levels, population growth and skills levels for towns and cities across England, with Reading coming out as one of the top performers in all categories. The report also shows a general trend of Southern cities outperforming their northern counterparts. Challenges facing England’s cities are also outlined with transport noted as a key for improving productivity and economic growth. Martin Salter said "This report builds on other serious studies which show conclusively that Reading is a success story with a dynamic local economy, large skills base, a regenerated town centre and an aspiring population. This really is one in the eye for all those mickey mouse surveys that have sought to do down our town, and in particular, the pathetic Readers’ Digest survey in April which was statistically and palpably false in its conclusions." He added: “The IPPR report confirms what residents and businesses already know: that Reading is a great city for living and working in. However, with the quality of transport links identified as key to an area’s economy, it further presses the case for the much needed improvements to local infrastructure. With the upgrade of Reading station and hopefully a future rail link to Heathrow, I have no doubt that we can continue to lead the way for cities across the UK.”
