Following his meeting earlier this month with waterways users campaigning against DEFRA cuts to the canal system, Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, has today called on the Leader of the House of Commons to make time for a Parliamentary debate on the subject. Aware of the important role the waterways play in the quality of life of his constituents and the strength of feeling on the matter, Mr Wilson was shocked to hear during Prime Minister' s Question Time* that the Prime Minister was ignorant that huge cuts were taking place. Rob Wilson commented: “The ‘Save Our Waterways Petition’ is amongst the top ten e-petitions on the Prime Minister's own website, so I was amazed by the Prime Minister's lack of knowledge on the subject” “Waterways play a crucial role in the quality of life of my constituents - for recreation, tourism and habitats for wildlife. I hope that a debate on the subject will assist with the education of the Prime Minister and his Government and make them think again about these damaging cuts .” Rob has signed EDM 50 on British Waterways. 14th December 2006
