Thames Valley MPs Demand Action From Great Western Trains
|
Following the chaos created by the new First Great Western (FGW) timetable, Thames Valley MPs today met with Alison Forster, Managing Director of First Great Western, to demand urgent changes and action on the following issues:
Overcrowding Punctuality Connections Capacity They also raised the issue of the substantial ticket price rises. MPs had previously warned FGW about the chaos that would be created by the new timetable back in March, but few of their recommendations were implemented by the train company. Alison Forster agreed to several small changes in the timetable (particularly in the Newbury area), but said she didn't have the rolling stock with the correct technology (ATP) to make wholesale changes to the timetable. She also confirmed that next year's timetable, due for change in December 2007, would have to be set by January 18th 2007! Rob Wilson, MP for Reading East, confirmed that the changes would not be substantial as Minister, Tom Harris, had written to him confirming "in future…it is unlikely that major changes to the timetable will be made." Rob said: "Overall the meeting was a little disappointing. FGW didn't really backtrack very much, even though they know timetable changes caused chaos. "They have agreed to make limited changes, but I'm not sure that many commuters won't simply give up and go back their cars. However, we are not giving up by any stretch of the imagination and we intend to bring the Minister together with Network Rail and FGW to hammer out the issues as soon as possible. We need to knock some heads together." "I ran a campaign a few years ago about overcrowding on trains. The issue was serious then but it's even more serious now, so I am delighted we are going to write as a group to the Health & Safety Executive to demand an investigation in to what continues to be a very serious issue. "As many of my constituents have pointed out, the train service is at its worst for at least a decade and we need to get urgent action. "The work I have been undertaking to unplug the bottleneck at Reading Station will help, but it will take years to get the new platforms into the station. Short-term we must get the various parties working together to make immediate improvements." 11/01/07 |
