Experience as Binman was far from Rubbish Says MP Wilson
|
Reading East MP, Rob Wilson, confined to the scrapheap the criticism that politicians are out of touch with their constituents when he worked with the Woodley Refuse Collection Team on Friday 12 January.
Rob joined the early morning shift to clear rubbish from Fairwater Drive and Nightingale Close in Woodley and finished at 9am when the refuse collection lorry was full. This was the third in Rob Wilson’s programme of work experience trips, which have already seen him working as a postman and as a shop worker at Tesco. Amongst the future jobs Rob will undertake is a shift as a Teaching Assistant , School ‘Dinner Lady’ and Train Station Assistant . Rob Wilson MP said today that his morning on the bins was his best work experience so far. "I must admit when I went through the Health & Safety briefing and they started talking about rats and Weils Disease, I was just a tad concerned. Learning the hand signals to make sure I didn't get run over by the lorry was also quite interesting! "But the experience was extremely informative, both in terms of the people I met and the camaraderie of the team it was good fun. "I didn't know, for example, that a binman can walk 100 miles a week - apparently one of the Woodley crew had a pedometer and measured it! "In addition to the walking there's quite a bit of physical exertion with lots of lifting and throwing of black bags. A binman should be able to keep pretty fit. "You have to be an early bird to do a Monday to Friday shift with a 4.00am start! I'd like to thank SITA, the bin crew and Wokingham District Council for letting me experience the job." 15/01/07 |
