Wilson Takes On Secretary of State Over Caversham Road Sorting Office
|
Rob Wilson today took the opportunity of Trade and Industry questions to ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he accepts that it is Government policy and the action of the Communication Workers Union that is leading to the loss of jobs at the Caversham Road Royal Mail sorting office.
Rob pointed out that the Government has liberalised the postal market and the CWU has sought to prevent the Royal Mail modernising its operations, and requested that the Secretary of State meet with Royal Mail senior management to seek to find ways to alleviate the job losses in Reading. Rob is the only Reading MP to raise this issue formally in Parliament. Rob said: "This is a matter that needed to be aired in Parliament, on the floor of the House of Commons with the Secretary of State, and that's what I've done. "I am pleased that the Secretary of State has acknowledged that the reason for the proposed loss of jobs in my constituency is due to government policy and the liberalisation of the postal market. "This has been done three years ahead of the EU requirement meaning that the Royal Mail is facing competition from foreign companies while they still compete in protected markets. "The CWU have not helped matters by opposing the much needed modernisation of the Royal Mail's operations to enable them to compete. "I want to see the maximum number of jobs preserved in my constituency and this will not be achieved by the Luddite attitudes of the CWU and the Reading West MP. "We cannot have a situation where a Union and a Labour MP from outside the sorting office's constituency are effectively telling the Royal Mail management how to run its business." The Royal Mail is currently only able to process 40 per cent of the post by machine, whilst most private operators can process over 90 per cent. Effectively this means that a public sector company is taking on world class private sector companies. The result is that the Royal Mail has been losing hundreds of millions of pounds of business in the past few months including: BT, Centrica, T-Mbile, Virgin, Carphone Warehouse and the Department of Work & Pensions. Losses on this scale are not sustainable for any modern business. "If we allow the CWU and Reading West MP to continue unchallenged even more people will lose their jobs in my constituency. I will be using my meeting with the Minister for Postal Services to ask him to ensure that the Royal Mail is able to effectively compete in the market that the Government has created and that the maximum number of jobs are preserved in my constituency." 18/01/07 |
