Wilson to Meet Postal Services Minister to Raise Caversham Road Sorting Office Closure
|
Reading East MP Rob Wilson has secured a meeting with Jim Fitzpatrick, Postal Services Minister to discuss the proposed closure of the Royal Mail sorting office.
In the interests of non-partisan, cross party co-operation Rob has invited the MPs for Reading West, Gloucester and Stroud, who are also affected by the reorganisation, as well as a representative of the Communication Workers Union. Despite a recent motion of the Council passed by the ruling labour group to only work with the Reading West MP, Rob has also invited Reading Borough Council to send a representative and one has been nominated. The meeting will take place on Thursday 1st Feb at 10.45am in the Minister's office at the DTI, 1 Victoria Street. Rob said "I am pleased that the Minister has agreed to meet me and make him aware of my concerns. The Royal Mail needs to be able to modernise its operation in order to compete effectively with the private operators that the Government has allowed into the postal market. I want to be certain that all options have been explored to keep jobs in Reading and protect the future of the Royal Mail operation in my constituency. "Despite the petty party politics being played by the CWU and local Labour politicians it is important that all views are represented and I have therefore extended the invitation to other MPs, the CWU and Reading Borough Council. I do hope that they will respond in the spirit of my invitation." 30/01/07 |
