Wilson Secures Commitment from Minister to Write to Royal Mail Chief Executive Over Sorting Office Closure
|
Rob Wilson MP today met with Postal Services Minister Jim Fitzpatrick to press the case for retaining the maximum number of Royal Mail jobs in his Reading East constituency.
Rob led a delegation consisting of MPs Martin Salter (Reading West) and David Drew (Stroud), Cllr Tony Page (representing Reading BC), and CWU representatives. Rob said "I asked the Minister, as the representative of the major share-holder (the government), to ensure that he is engaged in the debate over the future of the sorting office in my constituency. "There have been a number of competing claims from Royal Mail management and unions about the ability to reconfigure the existing site to take the new technology and about the environmental impact of the proposed changes. We need to know who is telling the truth." "Modernisation is crucial if the Royal Mail is to compete and sorting technology is critical to that. I requested the Minister to write to the Chief Executive of the Royal Mail, Adam Crozier, to ensure he is personally aware of the issues and competing claims, so that when this matter reaches the Royal Mail Board in May, he will be fully well aware of the situation in Reading. "I do not want to mislead anybody, and the Minister made this clear to those present, we only have a very small chance of saving the Sorting Office in its current form." 01/02/07 |
