Concern at potential Prudential job-cuts
|
Rob Wilson has expressed concern at news that Prudential (one of Reading’s biggest employers) is reviewing hundreds of jobs with a view to reducing costs by outsourcing them overseas. This follows an announcement that Prudential made an operating profit of almost £2bn in 2006.
Rob has written to Nick Prettejohn, Chief Executive of Prudential UK and Europe, to request an urgent meeting to discuss the company’s intentions and the possible impact on its operation in Reading. This news follows Royal Mail’s decision to move its sorting office out of Reading to Swindon and big job losses at Thames Water and Allied Bakeries in Rob’s constituency over the previous year. Rob said “I am concerned at the impact the loss of hundreds of jobs could have on the local community. Whilst Reading has been successful over the years in attracting new employers, job losses on this scale will have a significant impact. "It is therefore vital that the local Council work to ensure that Reading remains an attractive place to do business and schemes such as the one-way IDR and possible road pricing will be likely to be counterproductive”. 16/03/07 |
