Wilson welcomes rail Minister to Reading East constituency
|
Reading East MP, Rob Wilson, today welcomed Rail Minister, Tom Harris, to Reading Station in his constituency of Reading East. The Minister was on a “private visit” on the way back from the South West and called into Reading at the request of Network Rail.
Mr Harris visited Reading Station’s signal box, where equipment dating back to 1964 is still being used, and then attended a presentation by Network Rail in the Town Hall. During the presentation, the Minister heard a strong case for Reading Station upgrade including the 185,000 minutes of delay experienced at Reading Station annually, plus the knock on impact it has throughout the country. Reading Station is a bottleneck on the national network. He also heard about the massive increase in passenger numbers expected from Reading to Paddington over the next 8 years – as much as a 100 per cent increase is expected. Rob Wilson said: “Since Tom Harris became Minister for Railways late last year, I have lobbied him at every opportunity about Reading Station, both on the floor of the House and at various other meetings. "I don’t think any MP in the House of Commons has lobbied more about a rail related issue! From a position where the development of the Station was parked firmly in the sidings in May 2005, it has moved on to the top of the investment agenda. I think that is an achievement in itself.” “I hope the Minister has taken back with him the view that Reading Station is a top priority for my constituents, but also the wider region and national network. We now await an announcement in July,” Wilson concluded. 20/03/07 |
