Wilson launches campaign for mobile CCTV
|
In response to the anti-social behaviour problems in the East Reading area Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, will launch a campaign on Friday 23 March to bring mobile CCTV coverage to the community.
The introduction of mobile CCTV to cover hotspot areas is a main plank in tackling antisocial behaviour and the initiative is backed by the local Police, Neighbourhood Watch and local residents. The cameras which are mounted on poles can be set-up wherever an electricity supply is available and easily linked into real-time monitoring equipment. The cameras can be moved round to where the anti-social or crime hotspots are occuring. The monitoring of the cameras could primarily be undertaken by the Police, enabling PCSOs to be deployed to areas where problems are developing. However, the University could also link into the system to enable its own security staff to attend incidents. The cost of cameras is approx £5-8,000 depending on the number of cameras ordered. The campaign is about bringing all parts of the community together behind the scheme and to help fund it. Rob will be helping to approach local businesses, the University, Hospital, Police, Safer Reading Partnership and Reading Borough Council to ask that these organisations contribute to the relatively small costs of the project. Rob Wilson commented: “The introduction of CCTV to this area of Reading will make a major contribution to tackling the growing problem of anti-social behaviour and petty crime. The idea that extending the Town Centre drinking ban will deal with this problem is just wishful thinking. "People openly drinking is not the real issue, it's catching people who behave in an anti-social manner. Mobile CCTV can do this.” 22/03/07 |
