Wilson opposes new communications allowance
|
Reading East MP Rob Wilson yesterday voted against the government’s proposed additional £10,000 communications allowance for MPs.
The allowance which will be in addition to the existing £21,000 per year office allowance was voted through with the support of the Reading West MP, who took advantage of the debate to launch an attack on Mr Wilson’s most recent Parliamentary Report. Rob said, “The Reading West MP has made a complete fool of himself once again yesterday. Firstly, he erroneously criticised my Parliamentary Report on the floor of the chamber, which has been fully cleared and approved by the House of Commons Department for Finance and Administration. (Advice I received after the debate from the Clerk of the House was that matters such as this should be raised with the Parliamentary Commissioner.) "He should have checked his facts before his speech; I would have been perfectly happy to stop him making a fool of himself in front of MPs and the Deputy Speaker. Secondly, I would have thought that his constituents would expect him to be working on their behalf rather than attacking MPs for neighbouring constituencies. He seems totally fixated by what I do, it must be a bit like having a political stalker! "Ironically this comes shortly after I received a complaint about the Reading West MP’s report that it breaches the Parliamentary rules in two respects. 1. "It does not have the correct imprint informing people that it is paid for from public money and 2. that it was mailed in a pre-paid House of Commons envelope instead of postage being paid from his Parliamentary Allowances. I have taken the Clerk’s advice and will now refer the matter to Sir Philip Mawer the Parliamentary Commissioner.” "The fact that the MP for Reading West admitted breaking Parliamentary rules in his speech, suggests he is unworthy to be a Parliamentarian. It does not surprise me he devotes all his energy to attacking the MP for Reading East, he has spent the last 10 years doing it. "It doesn't seem to matter whether that MP is Conservative or Labour. He thinks he should be the only MP in Reading and has "issues" sharing the Town. He should show some political maturity." 26/03/07 |
