Wilson - Why Is Council Failing to Make Light Work of Repairs?
|
Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, has criticised Reading Borough Council for a string of broken promises to make repairs to the lighting on the Newtown Canal Bridge , following a site visit on Tuesday evening (3 April).
Local resident, Yvonne Hayward, contacted Rob Wilson in February about broken lighting on the bridge after several complaints to the Council failed to produce results. Mr Wilson immediately wrote to the Council to request that repairs were carried out and asked for an explanation for the Council’s tardy service. In a reply, dated 14 March, the Council promised that a contractor would be sent out to the site to make repairs to the broken lights. However, a site visit by Rob Wilson three weeks later revealed that the Council had yet again failed to follow through with its promises. The reply also failed to provide any explanation for the failure to action the earlier complaints. The bridge provides a main access route for Newtown residents walking to Reading Station. During the winter months the lack of light in the early hours and dark evenings has left many commuters feeling isolated and vulnerable when crossing the canal in one of the more isolated parts of the town. There have been several incidents involving violence in the same area in the past year. Mr Wilson commented: “It is a sad reflection on the Labour run authority that not only is it failing to address the strategic issues of the town, but now seems equally incapable of completing the simple task of changing a light bulb.” 04/04/07 |
