Reading rated worst place to bring up a family
|
Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, expressed his concern at an independent survey based on parents’ opinions that found Reading to be the worst place in the country to bring up a family.
Reader’s Digest commissioned pollster YouGov to ask parents to rate 12 features of a good place to bring up a family. They then used official data to rank local authorities across England , Wales and Scotland based on parents’ priorities. Number one on the parents’ list was “Good local schools” and number two was “a low crime rate”. On both counts Reading scored poorly and was ranked 408th out of 408 authorities. Rob said, “ Reading is generally a great place to live and it is where I have chosen to bring up my family. However this survey underlines the failure of the Labour Local Education Authority to ensure that all of our children have the best education possible. "It also contrasts sharply with neighbouring authorities like Wokingham and West Berkshire which are Conservative controlled. I hope that in next month's local elections, Reading people will take the opportunity to vote for Councillors who will ensure that in future Reading comes towards the top of surveys like this. Reading could do so much better, it is sad to see it perceived in this way," he concluded. 17/04/07 |
