Commission is a 'Fudge' says Conservative Transport Spokesman
|
Reading Conservatives have slammed Labour's handling of transport policy in the town as 'chaotic' following last night's decision of the ruling Labour Group's Cabinet to put the one-way IDR scheme out to further consultation.
Having spent substantial sums of Council Tax Payers' money on developing the one-way IDR scheme and promoting it to local residents, Labour have been panicked into a partial climb down following sweeping Conservative gains at the recent local elections. Conservative Environment and Transport Spokesman Cllr Richard Willis said: "Labour have shown a dismal failure of leadership over this issue. Prior to the local elections we were told that the one-way IDR scheme was the only solution to the traffic problems of the town centre. Now we are told that an "independent" commission will effectively take the decision for them. Labour should have listened to the views of local people and businesses, scrapped the scheme entirely and started again. Instead they have fudged. We will be holding them accountable for their waste of Council tax-payers' money and will be asking why Labour did not consult properly in the first place before proposing such a radical change to the town's transport network. We hope that this time Labour will listen to what the public and local businesses have to say in contrast to their attitude prior to 3rd May. Every member of the existing Cabinet voted FOR the one-way scheme. How can any commission appointed by them therefore be independent? Over the next few months the Conservative group will be working up an alternative comprehensive and costed transport strategy for Reading. It will aim to get the town moving and reduce the pollution of traffic stuck in jams." |
