Reading East MP highlights poor state of cycle network in Reading
|
During National Cycling Week, Reading East MP Rob Wilson, took the opportunity of Transport questions in the House of Commons today to highlight the lack of a joined-up cycle network in Reading.
In response Transport Minister Tom Harris indicated that the Government could not take the blame for local cycle facilities. The lack of facilities was entirely down to the local authority and that Mr Wilson should take up the matter with his local Council (Reading). Rob said "Tomorrow (Weds) I will be supporting Reading Cycle Week, when it meets at Reading Station en route to Green Park. As someone who uses a bike, I am conscious that cycling in Reading can be a dangerous mode of transport and that all too often Reading Borough Council's policy consists of painting white lines on pavements. We need a safe and fully integrated cycle network that encourages young and old alike to use it. Only then will we encourage more people out of their cars for local short journeys. It was interesting that the Minister's response highlighted the fact that any deficiencies in Reading's cycle network is entirely down to Reading Borough Council." 19/06/07 |
