Huge cost of fly-tipping
|
Figures obtained by Rob Wilson, MP for Reading East, show that there have been nearly 200,000 incidents of fly-tipping in the South-East of England region over the last two years (2004/5, 2005/6).
The figures show the cost to the taxpayer works out at nearly £10 million in clean-up costs. However, over the same period, fewer than 80 prosecutions were made. Mr Wilson obtained the figures, the latest available, in response to a Parliamentary Question. In the Reading Borough unitary area there were 672 cases recorded in 2004/5 (a further 9 from the Environment Agency) and 2,104 in 2005/6 (2 EA). In Wokingham the figures were 643 (9) 2004/5 and 767 (4) 2005/6. The cost to the Reading Council Taxpayer was £36,114 in 2004/5 and £91,390 in 2005/6. In Wokingham the Council spent £29,746 in 2004/5 and £40,102 in 2005/6. Mr Wilson said: "These figures show the huge scale of the fly-tipping problem in our area. Not only is the result an unsightly mess but a huge drain on the public purse. In many cases, where fly-tipping has occurred on private property, individual owners have to pick up the cost of disposal themselves. These figures are likely to get worse as Local Authorities, such as Reading , switch to fortnightly bin collections. "This growing problem needs urgent action. More effort needs to be put into catching those committing the offence and ensuring that they are prosecuted." |
