Wilson Visits Education Project

Rob Wilson, Member of Parliament for Reading East, commended the work being undertaken by the Community Education Trust (CET) to improve the educational attainment of children within the Pakistani community, when he visited the group on Saturday.
This project is run, managed and sponsored by a few generous members of the community and staffed by parent volunteers who feel passionate about education. The tuition is provided free of charge and the focus is on under performing children. In addition, the emphasis is on behaviour and discipline so that the children can become tolerant all rounded citizens and make an effective and positive contribution to the society we live in. Local and national statistics speak for themselves. Sadly, children of Pakistani origin are at or near the bottom of league tables in terms of educational achievements from Key stage 2 up to GCSE. The objective of CET is to make some difference in reversing some of these downward trends. Since its establishment, CET has been working towards helping pupils as well as their parents, to help themselves to raise the education standard and achievement of their children. One of the ways the Trust achieves this objective is by running a supplementary school on the weekend. In addition, the Trust provides a platform where parents can meet together to share their experiences in a relaxed environment and if necessary, be helped and guided to create a learning environment for their children at home. One of the parents commented: "Children and youth are our future. To safeguard our future we must concentrate on them. "The better nurtured and prepared they are, the better they will be in a position to face future challenges and grasp the opportunities which may come in their way. "The best way it can he done is by providing them quality education." Rob Wilson MP commented: “It is often said that education begins at home and it is true that children achieve more when their parents are fully engaged.” “During my visit I met a number of children and parents who are benefiting from the work being carried out by the Trust. "I commend the contribution that the charity is making to improve the prospects of the children who may otherwise have been failed by the system.” |
