Benyon calls for better NHS treatment for people with learning difficulties
|
Newbury MP, Richard Benyon has launched parliamentary motion calling for better treatment in the NHS for those with learning difficulties.
Richard tabled the Early Day Motion with the support of other MPs from all parties to draw attention to the ground breaking report by Mencap, “Death by Indifference” which was published last week. This report highlighted the cases of six people who died in recent years following harrowing experiences of neglect or poor treatment in the NHS. The first of these, Emma Kemp, came from Newbury. The motion reads, “That this House notes with concern Mencap's report Death by indifference, on the premature deaths of Emma Kemp, Mark Cannon, Martin Ryan, Ted Hughes, Tom Wakefield and Warren Cox while in the care of the NHS; welcomes the Government's announcement of an independent inquiry to learn the lessons from these deaths and to consider their wider implications, but believes that a national confidential inquiry into all premature deaths of people with a learning disability is vital to understand the scale of the problem; and urges the Government to carry out this inquiry and to take action to ensure that there is no institutional discrimination against people with a learning disability in the NHS.” Richard said, “I am delighted that after years of torment for the six families the Secretary of State for Health has ordered an inquiry into these deaths. I have nothing but praise for the Kemp family who have shown determination and dignity throughout this long battle” 19/03/07 |
