Former Liberal Democrats welcome in today’s Conservative Party
|
Newbury MP Richard Benyon has opened his door to disaffected Liberal Democrats following last week’s local election landslide victory for Conservative candidates across West Berkshire.
Richard agreed with defeated Liberal Democrats who admitted that much of the reason for the Conservative’s success was down to what is being called "the Cameron factor". However he also points to other factors such as the good job that has been done over the two years of the Conservative administration and to the relentlessly negative nature of the Liberal Democrat opposition on the Council and in their campaign. "There are many senior local Liberal Democrats who have been seriously uncomfortable with their local leadership’s approach and to the tone of their campaign. I am now inviting them to make contact with me. I have great respect for a number of local Liberal Democrats. They will be very welcome in today’s Conservative Party. Among much else, the modern Conservative Party stands for freedom, fairness, the rule of law and free enterprise. We are a Party that is serious about tackling climate change. These are values shared by a great many people who have been active Liberal Democrats. If they want to be involved in the only Party that offers an alternative for Government to Gordon Brown’s Labour Party, they will be very welcome." In the Newbury Constituency the Conservatives achieved 58.5% of the vote which compares with the General Election of 2005 when Richard Benyon received 48.95% of the vote. 09/05/07 |
