MP calls for more to be done to raise the plight of wounded servicemen
Newbury MP Richard Benyon told the House of Commons that the number of wounded returning from Iraq was becoming one of the best kept secrets of the Iraq deployment.

Quoting statistics from The Rifles, which incorporates Richard's former Regiment the Royal Green Jackets and West Berkshire's local Regiment, the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment, Richard pointed out that the 2nd Rifles had recently returned from Basra having suffered 50 wounded (as well as 3 killed) out of a total of around 650 men.

The 4th Rifles, now in Iraq , suffered 15 wounded (plus one killed) in the first 48 hours of their tour. The majority of the injuries are serious and include the loss of limbs and other conditions that will affect those wounded for the rest of their lives.

The Defence Secretary Des Browne, replied that details of the wounded were put on the Ministry of Defence website.

Following the exchange Richard said:

"I am so proud of the heroism of our Armed Forces and of my former Regiment in particular, but the impact of the high number of casualties is not apparent to the wider public.

"Whether or not people agree with the deployment of troops to Iraq, the British people revere their Armed Forces and will do all they can to help returning wounded servicemen.

"Every part of the country has people coming to terms with injuries or psychological problems resulting from active service in Iraq or Afghanistan.

"Wonderful organisations like the Royal British Legion, SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help) and the Army Benevolent Fund need our help now to provide support for our wounded"
