One-way IDR campaign enters a new phase to deliver people power.
|
The IDR Forum has re-geared their website - www.readingidr.info - to encourage informed debate on the controversial scheme.
The user-friendly site provides the visitor with the means to communicate with councillors, sign petitions, and importantly to become empowered to support a drive for the public inquiry the council is reluctant to hold. The site is focused on detailed analysis of the Council’s proposals and ensures that the public are informed. The site, developed and hosted by Edge Impact Consulting Limited, now provides much scope for the counter-arguments to be aired. Ken Good, the CEO of Edge Impact said, “The site is driven by the need for informed debate and by the effectiveness of the worldwide web to mobilise and collect public sentiment which can be effectively and quickly channelled to the decision-makers. It is obvious that the public feel frustrated by the Council’s abuse of the democratic process. The website is a powerful solution delivering direct dialogue.” Prof Paul Bardos commented, “The Council have taken a decision to progress the IDR against the better judgement of the town’s residents, some businesses and opposition councillors. "The IDR forum is working through the various aspects of the Council’s proposals to critically analyse the substance of their argument. This is one debate where rhetoric and sound bites will not do. "The One-way IDR will alter the character of the town irreversibly and that needs very careful consideration. The website brings together all the facts upon which the public can reflect and it shows why we should be more than concerned at the change.” The site will be updated regularly to give informed opinion of the Council’s scheme and current proposals. The site gives the public the means to question the motives of Reading Borough Council. Colin Lee added: “My experience of the Council says that the IDR is a long way from a done deal. So the public and other bodies can still influence the Council in very meaningful ways. The council and cabinet may not like dialogue, but with the site they will not be able to dismiss reasoned argument lightly. "It will be there on the screen for all to see, judge and comment. The website delivers the democratic means to call Councillors to account. This issue is a very good one for testing whether your councillor knows what the impact of the change will be for your ward and for Reading.” Cllrs Fred Pugh and Bob Green have gone on record for their parties, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats respectively, that there should be a public inquiry. It is time to make it happen. The public have the way and the means. 30/04/07 |
