Disability Living Allowance Campaign

SALTER WANTS JUSTICE FOR THE BLIND
Martin Salter, MP for Reading West this week attended an event in Westminster to support the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) Disability Living Allowance Campaign. The DLA Campaign is lobbying for the rights of blind people to receive the additional £27 per week of Disability Living Allowance which is paid to help disabled people with their extra mobility costs. Blind people currently do not receive this Allowance although they clearly face extreme difficulties in terms of independent mobility. Speaking after the event Mr Salter said: “The Royal National Institute for Blind People is pressing for action on an issue which will make a huge difference to the safety and comfort of those living with blindness and severely impaired vision. It must seem like common sense to most people that those who can’t drive and often have difficulty using public transport without assistance should be given financial support to offset their greater costs of mobility. This must be especially obvious when you consider that wheelchair users, many of whom can drive already receive the higher rate of benefit.” Mr Salter added “The lack of assistance for blind people is not merely a financial issue, though it has a financial solution. Many people in this situation face psychological as well as physical barriers to independent mobility. Isolation, fear, and loneliness as well as the threat of serious physical injury torment many blind people who cannot afford safe and reliable door to door transport on a daily basis.” The reception in Westminster on the 4th of December was supported, amongst other organisations by Guide Dogs for the Blind, Action for Blind People and the National Federation of the Blind. Mr Salter called on other Members of Parliament to join the campaign saying: “£17.10 per week simply isn’t enough to enable people with severe sight loss to go out and do the things that we all take for granted. There must be a change in the benefit system to give blind people back their independence.” Martin Salter MP 07976 946033 |
