Local MP tries out new business options
|
With uncertainty regarding the UK economy and question marks over the need for so many MP’s, Reading West MP Rob Wilson has been trying out new career options.
27th October 2008 As part of his regular ‘Work Experience’ programme, Reading East MP, Rob Wilson, spent Friday morning working at McDonalds in Friar Street, gaining a valuable behind the scenes insight into working at a fast food restaurant. He started the day at the local franchise’s training centre, before moving into the kitchen, where he helped out cooking burgers, making salads and frying chips. He also got a flavour of dealing with customers with a stint on the tills. “Working at McDonalds was extremely interesting,” Rob remarked, “people underestimate what goes on behind the scenes in the kitchen – there is an incredible amount of team-work and multi-tasking. I was extremely impressed at the standards of cleanliness and the drive for quality. I was also delighted that MacDonald’s staff have the opportunity to study GCSEs, Foundation Degrees and apprenticeships alongside their work. “I have been undertaking these work experience visits for over two years now and it is a fantastic learning experience that means I should never get trapped in the ‘Westminster bubble’,” Rob said. “Fast food restaurants, such as McDonalds pay an important part in the local economy,” Rob added, “the Reading branches of McDonald’s alone employ over 800 people, a sizeable number for any local business.” Amongst Rob’s many previous jobs are refuse collector, postal worker, journalist, supermarket checkout assistant, charity shop worker and PCSO. He will be taking on another local job soon. |
