Reading Youth Cabinet hosts local MP
|
4th November 2008
Rob Wilson MP, attended the Reading Youth Cabinet last night at the Council’s Civic Offices in his Reading East constituency. The Youth Cabinet is made up of 20 elected members, aged 11-19, who represent the young people in Reading. They meet fortnightly at the Civic Offices to discuss local issues and organise campaigns. The main campaign for 2008 is the development of a central Reading youth provision, where young people can gather and be safe, as provision in the town centre is relatively limited. Reading’s Member of Youth Parliament (MYP), Robert Sassoon, who represents the young people of Reading on the national UK Youth Parliament, is also a member of the Youth Cabinet, along with his two deputies (DMYP's), Holly Willson and Francis Nartey. Rob gave a speech to the Youth Cabinet members about youth issues nationally and locally, covering areas such as education, crime and social responsibility. He then fielded questions from members of the Cabinet and offered support for their campaigns. Rob said, “The Youth Cabinet is a great way to get young people engaged about what is important to them and to ensure that their views are heard. Too often decisions are made by this Government and the local Council without taking the opinions of young people into account and the Youth Cabinet is an important way to influence policy-makers." |
